Fiesta San Antonio

May2008parade We just recently returned from Spring Break which was spent visiting family in Dallas with a side trip to San Antonio, Tx. If you have not been to San Antonio it is a great place to go with kids. We were there for part of Fiesta. Fiesta is a week long city wide celebration which grew out an annual parade in honor of the Alamo.

The week kicks off with the Texas Caviler's River Parade. This festive parade actually takes place floating through San Antonio's river walk. Hey, how often do you get to see an actual floating parade? And one with a "King Antonio" as well as lots of princesses! Pretty cool! This is a very family friendly event. You can purchase tickets to sit in the chairs along the river walk or a few blocks from the center of town you can join the many families with young kids sitting on blankets along the river banks. If you've got little kids try and find spot close to the start of the parade as it runs 2 hours. I did not find the crowds at this event to be too much. From what I can gather there is another parade towards the end of the week going through the town which can get much more crowded.

Even if you do not make it for Fiesta there is still tons to do in San Antonio with children. Make sure to stay in a hotel on the river walk. It is gorgeous and tons of fun for kids. My kids loved strolling down the river looking at ducks, little water falls and more. We had some lovely meals dining outside along the river as well. There is a nice 30 minute boat tour we all took which I'd highly recommend as they point out many points of historical interest.

The Alamo is not to be missed. It's a very moving experience. The grounds around the Alamo have recently been redone and they are exquisite. San Antonio has lots of wonderful museums, a fabulous zoo and some truly stunning botanical gardens. May2008garden An old cement quarry was miraculously transformed into Japanese style gardens at the Botanical Gardens.

Just outside of San Antonio is Sea World as well as some interesting Hill Country attractions. We did the caverns in New Braunfels. They are massive and by guided tour only. My 5 year old princess and 9 year old son were equally impressed and mesmerized during the entire hour plus tour. Make sure to wear sneakers! Also make sure to check the Sea World schedule. We just assumed it would be open when we were in town but it was actually only open from Thursday through the weekend. Luckily, the kids had had such a great time at the zoo, they did not even complain about missing it.

We stayed at very kid friendly hotel. Popcorn in the lobby every afternoon, roof-top pool, self-serve complimentary breakfast and great location. We had a 2 1/2 room suite (2 bedrooms and kitchen area with sink, fridge) for under $200. It was called the Drury. (They have 2 Drurys in town. We stayed at the old fashioned one as opposed to the modern one in a former bank. I feel it was better located.) If you are looking for a more elegant hotel try the La Mansion del Rio.

Washington, D.C. with the kids

0308museumaidc_2  I just recently took the Amtrak train from Newark, NJ to Washington, D.C. with my kids to meet my husband who was already there on business for the weekend. If you can start out in NYC you'll get a better seat selection, but we did fine, although I did  have to ask a lady if she wouldn't mine switching rows with me so I could sit next to my children. Pack hearty snacks as the cafe food leaves much to be desired, although the kids really did enjoy walking back there.

Despite rain and cold weather we had an absolute ball in D.C. The city is gorgeous and there is so much to see. If you can squeeze in a weekend there this spring, I would highly recommend it.

My kids are 5 and 8, so we'd spend about half the day touring and then come back to our hotel to relax and enjoy the pool. Then we'd head out for an early dinner. Our hotel, the Marriot at Metro Center was conveniently located walking distance to the Mall as well as the White House. I would highly recommend our hotel. The location was fabulous, it has a Starbucks in the lobby, a heated indoor pool and 2 good restaurants. One restaurant was very family friendly, featuring a delicious breakfast with a reasonable price for kids.

We walked almost everywhere as things were so close. My kids really enjoyed the Air and Space Museum, Washington Memorial, White House, The National Museum of the American Indian, National Gallery' of Art Sculpture Garden, Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial and the Frog Exhibition at the National Geographic Museum. There so much more to see, but we were only there a limited time so we stuck to what seemed to be the most kid-friendly.

As far as dining we had a great meal in the Native American Museum. The museum is gorgeous and has casually cafeteria featuring an amazing selection of Native American foods. For dinner we had an excellent meal at Ceiba It is a trendy, Latin restaurant and not something I would have taken my young kids to but the hotel had it listed as family friendly. We went early before the real scene starts. The staff could not have been nicer to the kids.

Thrilling Water Ride in New York City!

Cld07_shark_kids_11

Well look no further; the Shark Speedboat Thrill Ride should be your first stop if you are coming the New York City with your family. The Shark Speedboat launches from South Street Seaport and zooms up to 85 miles an hour around the southern tip of Manhattan. My kids ages 4, 6, and 8 went on the thrilling ride with their high school aged cousins, and I’m not sure who had more fun, the older cousins, my little kids or the 2 husbands. My sister in law and I kept my 2 year old behind for safety reasons and to make sure someone was on dry land to take embarrassing photos of all the totally drenched boaters.

The guide on the boat gave a funny tongue and cheek tour of Downtown Manhattan, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, World financial Center and of course the Brooklyn Bridge. The sharkboat managed to stop for a brief moment at the Statue of Liberty, in order to have a full-fledged water gun fight with another Shark Boat (this is where most of the soaking and good humored fun occurred).

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all of you Irish out there. My husband is working late tonight so we celebrated on Sunday with the traditional meal of corn beef, cabbage and potatoes. Both my paternal grandparents were Irish so it's a special day for my family.

Most of you all have probably heard of the sensational step dance show "River Dance." They are on their farewell tour and will be swinging through Newark, NJ in April. I'm hoping to go, but the show is the day after we get back from a Spring Break trip. I know my dance loving little princess would go bananas for the show. Hate to think of her missing it.

ABT Ballet for Kids at the Met

A friend of mine just let me know about this great upcoming ballet event for kids:  ABT Kids at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She went last year with her little girl and boy who both loved it. The program is kid friendly and just the right length of time- 1 hour. $25 per ticket is quite reasonable.

The program is May 31 at 11:30 AM and tickets go on sale in April 6. I'm running my children's annual school Pancake Breakfast that morning or I would be there. Let me know how your little princesses and princeses all like it!

Snow Tubing at Campgraw

Not everything we do has to be about a ballerina or a fairy or a princess. Last week, my husband, son (8), daughter (5) and I spent a great morning snow tubing at Campgaw in Mahwah, NJ. This ski resort is blissfully only 40 minutes away from our home in NJ. It also ended up to be a freaky, warm day for winter- 55 degrees! I hate the cold, so the warm temp was right up my alley.

Campgaw is a relaxed, family friendly resort. The parking lot was just a couple minute walk from the bottom of the mountain and its lifts. We ordered tickets online around 8:30 am that morning for the 10-noon slot and then headed out. I personally, would not head out to snow tube without reserving your tickets ahead of time. When we ordered our tickets that morning there was plently of room in this first session, but the 12-2 PM session only had 5 tickets left.

You sit in your tube and a line pulls you up the mountain. The kids got a kick out of the ride up even my little princess, but of course the zippy ride down was the biggest thrill.

Going down the lanes are divided up and they staff is very concientious about making sure people are accordingly staggered so there's really no possibilty of crashing into anyone. My year old held her own quite nicely.

Right next to the tubing slope was the bunny slope. Lots of young  kids were learning the ropes. We have not taken our kids skiiing yet so it was a great opportunity for them to peak at what's to come.

Enchanted

Moviegraphic If you have not seen Enchanted yet, grab the kids and head out to the theater. It is fabulous. One of my favorite types of movies are ballet movies or movies about a fairy or a princess. This one has an amazing Bollywood-esque dance scene in Central Park which is just not to be missed.

Some of my other favorite dance movies which are good for kids as well are: The King and I, Sound of Music, High School Musical, The Wizard of Oz and Hairspray.

Basically we at PrimaPrincessa.com love everything that is princess.
